The inspiration for Tranquilidad began on the waters of the San Francisco Bay. Whenever I approached or departed Sausalito by boat, I found myself drawn to the quiet rhythm of the hillside as it rose above the shoreline. The layered contours of the landscape, the changing blues of the water and sky, and the gentle pace of the journey created a rare sense of calm that stayed with me long after returning to shore.
Named after the Spanish word for "tranquility," this painting is not a literal portrait of Sausalito, but an interpretation of the feeling it evokes. The overlapping forms suggest hills, islands, and waves simultaneously, allowing the landscape to drift between memory and imagination.
As light moves across its textured surface, new layers and rhythms emerge, much like the changing view from a boat crossing the bay. My hope is that the painting offers viewers a moment of stillness—a place to pause, breathe deeply, and experience the quiet peace that first inspired it.
