Growing up in Barbados, I lived beside a sugar cane plantation where my mother worked harvesting cane. As a child, I would occasionally visit her in the fields, surrounded by towering green stalks that swayed in the trade winds, their movement creating ever-changing patterns of light, shadow, and texture. Those moments left an enduring impression on me. In Salud, those memories are reimagined through layered acrylic and sculptural surfaces rather than literal representation. Named after the Spanish word for “health,” the painting reflects both the quiet vitality of those early landscapes and the resilience, care, and hope they have come to represent for me. As light moves across its textured surface, the work reveals new rhythms over time, inviting the viewer to slow down, look more closely, and discover something different with each encounter.
